Chapter 4-Eli

I watch nervously as Ella is carried away by the medical staff, her mother, and Caleb in her company. I want desperately to go after her, to recover my mate and flee this place, but I must face the reality that she is in no position to leave the palace. I look down at Darrius, who lets out a heavy sigh of relief.

“I told you, the premonitions are never wrong.” I groan from his assurance.

“Yes, but now that leaves me with other questions.” Like, how could I possibly hurt the one creature I breathe for? Now alone with her father, I’m confident I’ll get the answers I seek.

“Very crafty of your majesty.” I clap my hands, applauding him for his deception. No one could scheme as well as the King.

“I knew the moment her heart fluttered for you. Did you really think I would allow you to claim her and leave my people to dust?” The King rises from his throne, something I’ve never seen him do before. The confidence that alludes him frightens Darrius. Clearly, my right-hand knows something I don’t.

“I’ve always known my Ella was special, even though she was born human. I could never pinpoint what her purpose was until she laid eyes on you. It was then I knew I had the power to save my people all along.” I want to kill him where he stands for what he’s done to my Ella. He’s hurt her in the worst way imaginable.

“It’s unfortunate the spell wore off the minute I agreed to the treaty. Your unique “clause” seemed to undo my plans. But not to worry, I always have a backup plan.”

“What have you done?” My words come out slow and menacing. I want to end this scheming monster, but I can’t take away the man my mate loves just as much as me. It would break her.

“Caleb has made us an offer I couldn’t refuse. He’s chosen Ella to be his mate, and I agreed. The two are betrothed, with my blessing, of course. A treaty that would make my people the most powerful amongst the paranormal.”

“I’m sure this was of your doing?” The King laughs.

“Not this time. No, Caleb took one look at my beautiful daughter, and that was the end of him. An unexpected opportunity.”

“You bastard,” I mumble aloud. The King won’t order my death, it would harm his daughter and his opportunities for succession.

“Looks like we are both in a pickle. I’ll have a room prepared for you. I trust you are staying until this is amicably resolved. But please, do something with the Dragons. They are starting to frighten my court.” The King walks off, leaving me to my defeat.

“You knew.” My heartbreaking words come out as a whisper to Darrius.

“I’m sorry, my Lord. I told you, I am only allowed to share so much. It’s the law.”

“I’m not holding it against you, Darrius.” I take a deep breath, preparing myself for what’s next.

“It looks like I’m going to need your Dragons after all.
